‘The 2010 “J” Merlot, Cabernet, Malbec is a blend of 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 85% Merlot and 10% Malbec. It displays a deep garnet-purple color and aromas of fresh black currant, blackberries and mint over hints of chocolate, dried Mediterranean herbs and cedar. Medium bodied, it is richly fruited in the mouth with a firm level of fine-grained tannins, crisp acid and finishing long and layered with a faint herbal lift. Very tight and youthful still, it should drink best 2013 to 2019+.’
‘Can Marlborough produce a classy, Bordeaux-style red? Matured for well over a year in French oak casks (50% new), the 2009 vintage ( ) is a blend of Merlot (80 per cent), Malbec (12 per cent) and Cabernet Sauvignon (8 per cent), harvested at 24.5 to 25 brix, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Deep and youthful in colour, it is very rich, with concentrated plum, nut and liquorice flavours, showing good complexity, and the structure to age. The 2010 ( ) is even better, with dense colour and exceptional concentration of blackcurrant, plum, spice and nut flavours. Notably rich and sweet-fruited, with layers of flavour, it should flourish for a decade.’
‘…Dense, beefy red with a mix of berry and savoury/herb characters together with a seasoning of classy oak. The wine has enough sweet fruit to perfectly balance fine, firm tannins giving a pleasantly drying finish.’
